We are wrapping up the first week of the 2015 NFL free agency period with a flurry of activity for the Kansas City Chiefs. Some might say that flurry was unexpected due to the salary cap constraints. I remember saying that if the Chiefs truly want to make moves, the salary cap can be maneuvered. Yes, you're simply pushing your problems into the future but if you need to sign a player today, you can usually find a way to fit it in the cap.
The Chiefs were active and we've got all the moves rounded up here.
Signed by Chiefs
Free agents from other teams:
WR Jeremy Maclin (5 years, $55M)
G Ben Grubbs (Trade, 4 years, $24M)
S Tyvon Branch (1 year, $2M)
G Paul Fanaika (3 years, $8M)
Re-signed by Chiefs
S Ron Parker (5 years, $30M)
LB Josh Mauga (3 years, $8M)
LB Dezman Moses (1 year)
TE Richard Gordon
TE Demetrius Harris (1 year tender)
OLB Josh Martin (1 year tender)
WR Junior Hemingway (1 year tender)
Franchise tag
LB Justin Houston (Franchise tag unsigned, $13.2M)
The highlight here is WR Jeremy Maclin, who was the first or second receiver on the market (after Randall Cobb signed). The Chiefs had a major need at receiver and even had the crazy stat about a receiver not catching a touchdown pass all year to go along with it.
The other big highlight which hit on a major area of need was the trade for G Ben Grubbs as well as his new contract. The Chiefs got much, much better on the offensive line with that signing.
Cut by Chiefs
WR Dwayne Bowe (Visiting Browns)
TE Anthony Fasano (Signed by Titans)
DE Vance Walker (Signed by Broncos)
LB Joe Mays
WR AJ Jenkins
WR Donnie Avery
The big name here is WR Dwayne Bowe, whose release was expected by many, particularly after the Chiefs signed Maclin. Bowe has been linked to the Browns at this point.
The release of TE Anthony Fasano was a slight surprise. I thought they would hang onto him and make a determination closer to training camp. He signed with the Titans.
Chiefs free agents
C Rodney Hudson (Signed by Raiders, 5 years, $44.5M)
S Kurt Coleman (Signed by Panthers, 2 years)
G Mike McGlynn
DT Kevin Vickerson
OL Jeff Linkenbach
CB Chris Owens
LS Thomas Gafford
RT Ryan Harris
RB Joe McKnight
Not much here. One name I'm wondering about is OT Ryan Harris, who started at right tackle for the Chiefs last season. I still don't know what the Chiefs right tackle plan is. Jeff Allen? Donald Stephenson?
