It was reported last week that the Kansas City Chiefs were signing free agent DL Vaughn Martin. It took a few days but that transaction has been formally reported with the NFL. With a shoutout to Terez Paylor who noticed it before me, the NFL's Monday transactions report confirmed that the Chiefs signed Martin to a contract. Yahoo Sports' Rand Getlin reported last week it was a one-year contract.
Martin, 28, was a 2009 fourth round pick by the Chargers. He has also spent time with the Dolphins and Lions. He is listed at 6'4 and 297 pounds. He will presumably be on the roster as a defensive end. He was a regular in the lineup for about two of his five seasons in the NFL.
The Chiefs defensive end situation will be an interesting one this year. Mike DeVito was the starter entering last year but he tore his Achilles in Week 1. There's no guarantee that he'll be back with the Chiefs with that kind of injury at age 32. Then there's Vance Walker, who signed a multi-year contract in free agency last year but didn't play all that much. It was Jaye Howard who took the bulk of the defensive end snaps after DeVito went down.
It's always a good thing to have more competition. And now the Chiefs will have that at defensive end.
