Anthony Fasano released by Chiefs and becomes a free agent

The Anthony Fasano era is over in Kansas City. According to a report from NFL Network's Jeff Darlington, the Chiefs will be releasing Fasano later today. (Update: The Chiefs have now confirmed.)

Chiefs will be releasing TE Anthony Fasano later today, source says. Still a productive vet (4 TDs in '14) — but salary cap casualty for KC.

This was a move that some had wondered about given Travis Kelce's emergence. I wondered if they might hang onto Fasano until training camp to give themselves more time to make a decision. Fasano's ride in KC ends two years into his four-year contract.

What this means is more validation for Travis Kelce, who now becomes the clear No. 1 tight end with Demetrius Harris on the roster behind him. Kelce slowly took over the No. 1 tight end job and by the second half of the 2014 season he was playing more than Fasano.

The #Chiefs stand to save $2 million if they cut Fasano outright, $3.1 million if they make him a post-June 1 cut.

Fasano had 25 catches and four touchdowns last season. So four more than the Chiefs receivers.
