It's not a good day for receivers in Kansas City.
The Chiefs have now formally announced the release of Donnie Avery and also announced that WR AJ Jenkins has been released, too. Avery's release was reported a little earlier and you can see the Chiefs fans reactions to that news here.
As for Jenkins, this is another one that's not going to surprise folks. It seemed like early on the Chiefs were doing everything they could to get Jenkins to go out and take that receiver job but he never really did. He had 17 receptions in two seasons with the Chiefs, including nine this year before he ended the season on IR.
Jenkins almost ended the Chiefs streak of no receivers catching a touchdown early when he caught a quick screen from Alex Smith with nothing but daylight ahead of him in a game against the Chargers early in the season. Somehow, Jenkins stepped out of bounds. See the picture above for a quick memory of that play. You know how the rest of the story goes -- no receiver touchdowns the rest of the season.
Jenkins came to Kansas City in a trade for Jon Baldwin in August 2013. The 49ers cut bait early and now with Jenkins out we can close the book on that trade.
All together, both moves save nearly $5 million in cap space.
The #Chiefs saved approximately $4.8 million in 2015 by releasing Avery and Jenkins.
