The Kansas City Chiefs release of Donnie Avery came as a surprise to ... no one. Unfortunately for Avery, the writing was on the wall when he never really fully came back from his sports hernia surgery. Add in a key fumble in the Broncos-Chiefs game and more than $3 million of cap space saved and you have the whole story.
(Update: Chiefs also cut AJ Jenkins)
Chiefs fans reactions to the Avery release were not surprising ones. One thing folks did bring up is Albert Wilson, who will have a shot to get those snaps at receiver. Considering the investment in Wilson is so little, it would be terrific for the Chiefs -- and their salary cap -- if he worked out. Here's what I wrote when Wilson seemed to overtake Avery's spot. You can find several MNChiefsfan pieces on Wilson here, here and here.
Here are some of the reactions:
I'm old enough to remember when Chiefs twitter was excited about Donnie Avery

Donnie Avery was one of our suggested releases for the #Chiefs a few weeks ago http://t.co/EphdJRSmT1

#Chiefs save $3.4 million and cut a guy who was in the top 5 in NFL in drop percentage the last two years. Donnie Avery.

Donnie Avery cut, not sure he played another snap after his inexcusable/lazy fumble vs the Broncos. Albert WIlson a better WR. #Chiefs

Donnie Avery cut, saving the #Chiefs $3.4 million against cap. Dorsey beginning to clear money to sign Houston, either to tag or long-term

.@ArrowheadPride Albert Wilson can do everything Avery did and more based on what we saw last season. No-brainer for sure.
