LaDainian Tomlinson is one of the best running backs in NFL history so it's kind of cool to hear him say that Jamaal Charles is the first running back he would take in the game today.
"I think I'd draft Jamaal Charles," Tomlinson said on the Talk of Fame Network. "And the reason I say that is because there is something (about) the threat of a running back who can run it and catch ... but, at the same time, be able to take it 80 yards on any given play. That's rare. And that sparks fear in a defense."
Charles and LT have had some similar seasons ... LT just did it for a lot longer. Charles always the yards per carry trump card (5.5 vs. 4.3) but obviously he has a ways to go to get on LT's level. LT's point about catching the ball too is a good one. He should know because he consistently caught a ton of passes out of the backfield, including 100 in the 2003 season.
Out of the backs in today's game ... Charles is up there for me. There aren't many backs left in the league who have done what Charles has done over the last five or six seasons. The question is obviously when his decline will start because unfortunately it's coming at some point. He was a little banged up last year so his total carries were down but he still averaged 5.0 yards per carry.
