Alex Smith has always been an accurate quarterback who doesn't make too many mistakes. The best thing you could say about him is that you know what he's going to give you each week.
That is still the case but so is this: Alex Smith is one of the most dangerous runners in the NFL. At least as far as quarterbacks go.
Smith escaped the Browns rush on Sunday and ran this one for 29 yards late in the first half.

Smith has two touchdown passes in the first half but he also has 54 yards on six rushes, good for an average of nine yards per carry. It looks like he takes a couple of reads and then tucks it. If he can get the guaranteed six yards running the ball, he will take that rather than risk a throw. It's a smart, safe play if it's there.
Smith's game is different when he's running the ball more. It changes how the defense has to play the Chiefs.
