Ten Kansas City Chiefs players can lay claim to being the best player in the AFC West last season, according to the all-AFC West team created by Pro Football Focus. RB Jamaal Charles has been a mainstay on these types of lists for a few years but he is not on this team. Denver Broncos RB CJ Anderson gets the nod at running back.
Here is the full team. My thoughts on the Chiefs players below.
Offense: FB Anthony Sherman, TE Travis Kelce, OT Ryan Harris, C Rodney Hudson
It's not a surprise that C Rodney Hudson made the list. He's had a terrific season in what is a contract year for him. The Chiefs will have a decision to make on his free agency in the next couple of months. Then there's OT Ryan Harris. He was signed shortly before the season when it was announced that OT Donald Stephenson would be suspended for the first month of the season. Harris never gave up that spot, starting 15 games. As a free agent, Harris will be someone to consider re-signing depending on how the Chiefs feel about Stephenson.
Defense: LB Justin Houston, NT Dontari Poe, CB Sean Smith
Defensively there aren't any major surprises. Obviously, LB Justin Houston made the list as the NFL's sack king. NT Dontari Poe does need help to prevent a second half decline but he's still a very good nose tackle. Then there's CB Sean Smith, who had a great season as the Chiefs starting cornerback. LB Derrick Johnson is someone who probably would have been on this list had he been healthy.
Special teams: P Dustin Colquitt, PR De'Anthony Thomas, ST Josh Martin
Colquitt is Colquitt. You expect him on this list. DAT actually graded out as the fourth best returner of the year, according to Pro Football Focus. He had a few slip-ups during the season with fair catch decisions but for his first year he did a nice job. S Kelcie McCray is another solid special teamer for the Chiefs.
