The Kansas City Chiefs third preseason game will come against a familiar face. The game is against the Minnesota Vikings and the familiar face is one Matthew Brennan Cassel.
As you know, the Chiefs traded for Cassel prior to the 2009 season. He was the starting quarterback in Kansas City for four years, starting 47 games and winning 19 of those. The Chiefs had more bad times (2009, 2011, 2012) than good times (2010) under Cassel. The Chiefs overall talent level during that time was weak compared to the rest of the league.
So Cassel's coming back. The game is at Arrowhead. How will he be received by Chiefs fans?
My guess is that he will be booed. And that's OK. Not every player in Chiefs history will have a special or positive place in fans hearts. Everyone knows Cassel was a great guy off the field (which is why you'll hear some cheers too) but fans obviously care about the product on the field. During Cassel's time in Kansas City, the Chiefs didn't win enough games. His team lost 10 of the last 11 games he started in Kansas City. So he gets booed. Nothing malicious about that. It's why the NFL is so great -- because the fans truly care. There's a winner and a loser, boos and cheers.
What's your take on how Cassel will be received?
