Chiefs-Panthers final score: Aaron Murray to Travis Kelce highlights KC's 28-16 loss

The final score in the Kansas City Chiefs and Carolina Panthers preseason game was 28-16 in favor of the Panthers. Read on for observations from the game, which leaves the Chiefs 1-1 on their 2014 preseason schedule.

The Kansas City Chiefs couldn't make it two in a row, losing their second preseason game to the Carolina Panthers, 28-16. The highlights of the game included a nice day from Dwayne Bowe, who had five catches for 62 yards, including four first downs. Aaron Murray's 43-yard TD pass to Travis Kelce was another highlight with Kelce's second long touchdown pass in as many weeks. The Chiefs offense moved the ball well early. The defense played well early with three 3-and-outs in the first quarter. Unfortunately, the first team offense's momentum didn't continue with a shaky offensive line interrupting the momentum. Defensively, the secondary saw some penalties along with four passing plays over 20 yards.

The Chiefs saw Aaron Murray play most of the second half, which is a change of pace from last week when Tyler Bray relieved Chase Daniel.

The Panthers had less total yards than the Chiefs but scored more points, which is a familiar recipe for success (see the 2013 Chiefs). There was some good from the Chiefs as well as some bad. The Chiefs have video highlights here. Let's review some of the other highlights.

Chiefs offense

Alex Smith started the game and played the entire first half. He ended up 14-of-22 for 127 yards.

Knile Davis started for Jamaal Charles, who did not play due to an injury.

Chase Daniel played just one series before Aaron Murray came in. Murray has almost always been behind Tyler Bray in practice so it was interesting he came in before him.

Murray's first NFL completion was a 43-yard touchdown to Travis Kelce, right down the seam as Kelce did in last week's 69-yard TD. Later, Murray threw an interception to AJ Klein. The pass was behind Demetrius Harris.

The Chiefs offensive line as a whole did not have a good night.

Three of the Chiefs first four plays went for first downs -- 11 yard run by Knile Davis, 16-yard pass to Anthony Fasano in the flat, 10 yard comeback to Dwayne Bowe. Then Chiefs first drive stalled when they couldn't convert on a 3rd-and-14.

Loved this play. 3rd-and-6, Alex Smith gets rid of it as he gets hit, Dwayne Bowe on a crossing route catches it in stride and picks up YAC for a 19-yard gain.

Knile Davis is a large man with lots of speed. But he seems to dance around sometimes instead of driving forward. On a 2nd-and-1, Davis bounced it outside and was tripped up. I feel like he's big enough to spend more time going north and south.

The Chiefs were inside their own 10 yard line on a 3rd-and-8 and Alex Smith scrambles from a collapsing pocket to pick up the first down. He had 431 rushing yards last year.

Smith was sacked on a 3rd-and-9 inside their own 20 yard line. Bad timing.

The Chiefs offensive line as a whole did not have a good night. Fox announcer John Lynch said at one point that Panthers DE Greg Hardy was taking Eric Fisher to school. It wasn't a great night for Fisher, who also had a holding penalty. I saw Zach Fulton get beat pretty good.

Aaron Murray's first NFL completion was a 43-yard touchdown to Travis Kelce.

Anthony Fasano had one of the best catches of the night. Smith threw it to him while he was in coverage. Fasano got his hands on the ball and bobbled it before hauling it in for the first down. The best part is it came on a 3rd-and-8.

Chase Daniel found a wiiiide open Frankie Hammond for a 30-yard gain. Must've been a blown coverage or something. Kudos to Chase for spotting that.

Chase Daniel missed a wide open Cyrus Gray while in the red zone. It would have been a touchdown. Chiefs ended up kicking a field goal so it cost them points.

De'Anthony Thomas was absolutely drilled on a quick out pass. Good to see him pop right back up.

AJ Klein picked off an Aaron Murray pass that was behind Demetrius Harris.

Cyrus Gray got a LOT of reps once again. He had 11 last week and ended with 10 carries on Sunday night.

Frankie Hammond had a 51-yard gain wiped out due to a holding penalty. Hammond had a really nice night with three catches for 57 yards.

Chiefs defense

The Chiefs defense blitzed early on third down forcing a throw away from Cam Newton. The Panthers line gave Cam Newton time to get something off but apparently nothing was there. Owens, who had two nice rushes on the quarterback in this game, forced him to throw it away.

The Chiefs missed a gimme interception. Derrick Johnson tipped a Cam Newton pass up in the air with three Chiefs players around. Malcolm Bronson went for the ball and fell over DJ, letting the ball hit the ground. It should've been intercepted.

Cam Newton missed an open Kelvin Benjamin deep. Husain Abdullah, who was in coverage, got lucky because he was a few steps behind Benjamin. On the next play, Abdullah sacked Cam Newton.

The Panthers converted a 3rd-and-16. That's really bad by the Chiefs defense.

Joe Mays chased after Cam Newton for a sack but missed him. Mays got back up and as Cam continued to scramble he got back to him and picked up the sack. Second effort.

The Chiefs secondary was hit with three flags in the first half. This will be something to watch with the new emphasis on illegal contact.

Phillip Gaines was in coverage as Derek Anderson found Brenton Bersin for a 16-yard TD. Gaines got turned around on the route.

Special teams

Ryan Succop was the first kicker out, making a looong 54-yard field goal.

Cairo Santos followed up with a 44-yard field goal.

DAT was body slammed on his second punt return. He got caught a few yards into his run and the Panthers player just picked him up.

Frankie Hammond had a nice 43-yard kick return down the middle of the field.

No return touchdowns :(
