Jamaal Charles has a minor injury, won't play in Chiefs-Panthers preseason game

A minor foot injury will keep Jamaal Charles out of the Chiefs-Panthers game.

Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

The preseason is the only time you can hear Jamaal Charles isn't playing and think, "Whew, that's good."

The Chiefs have decided to rest Charles for Sunday night's preseason game against the Carolina Panthers. There is a Bob Gretz report of a minor foot injury being the reason the Chiefs decided to rest him. Other reporters in Charlotte are saying the same.

Teicher also reports he did not make the trip to Charlotte. Charles had three carries and two receptions in the Chiefs preseason opener last week against the Cincinnati Bengals.

The younger Chiefs looking for reps probably won't complain he's not playing. This probably means more time for Knile Davis and Cyrus Gray. Davis is the backup running back while Gray had a team-high 11 carries in the preseason opener. De'Anthony Thomas saw just one carry last week so I'd like to see more from him on offense, too.

The Chiefs are also resting Eric Berry due to a heel injury. Both players are veterans and both are Pro Bowlers. Preseason isn't crucial for them. Assuming they're both available for Week 1, we probably won't even remember that they missed time in the preseason. As Teicher says though, it's something to monitor.

Other players not expected to play:

Albert Wilson's name jumps out. He had been practicing but suffered an ankle injury last week. Likely another precautionary move for the Chiefs.
