The Kansas City Chiefs Week 1 game plan will not include Dwayne Bowe now that the NFL has announced he's been suspended for the Chiefs preseason opener against the Tennessee Titans.
So, how will the Chiefs handle life without Bowe?
Let's start with the most recent depth chart, which will be cut in half by the time Week 1 gets here.
WR: Dwayne Bowe, Junior Hemingway, Kyle Williams, Jerrell Jackson, Mark Harrison, Weston Dressler
WR: Donnie Avery, A.J. Jenkins, Albert Wilson, Frankie Hammond Jr., Fred Williams, Darryl Sugent, Deon Anthony
Dwayne Bowe and Donnie Avery are obviously the top two guys. From there, it's probably Junior Hemingway as the third receiver on the field. Albert Wilson will play a factor into that decision of the third receiver along with AJ Jenkins, Kyle Williams and Frankie Hammond depending on how the roster shakes out.
With Bowe out, the Chiefs may decide to keep Avery in his role and replace Bowe's spot with someone else, rather than giving Avery the routes that Bowe would run.
The Chiefs receivers need to know every receiver position on the field because they move around so much. Hemingway has lined up inside and out. Wilson lined up in three spots in his first three plays in the preseason game. I remember Hammond saying that the receivers had to know all the other positions, which is what makes it a difficult.
My guess, which is still way too early, would be putting Avery and Hemingway on the outside while playing Wilson, who has had a good camp, in the slot. The Chiefs 3-6 receivers appear to be similar talent-wise so I could see plenty of shuffling going on.
The Chiefs have their options to replace Bowe. They just may not be as good as Bowe at this point.
How would you handle it?
