The KC Chiefs and Carolina Panthers are meeting on national TV Sunday evening. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. (Arrowhead Time) on Sunday, August 17 with a national TV viewing on Fox.
Cam Newton has been cleared to play despite his ankle injury, which forced offseason ankle surgery.
UPDATE: Jamaal Charles has a minor foot injury and will not play
QB Alex Smith and many of the Chiefs other starters are expected to play the entire first half, which matches up with how Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has handled his quarterbacks during the preseason in the past. After Smith will be Chase Daniel, the second string quarterback. It's unclear what the breakdown will be with quarterbacks Chase Daniel, Tyler Bray and Aaron Murray.
The Chiefs and Panthers are similar in two big ways: 1.) They both had surprisingly successful 2013 seasons with the Panthers winning 12 games and the Chiefs winning 11 and 2.) most people are predicting both teams to regress. It's a fair prediction given where the Chiefs have been. But it's just that -- a prediction.
The last time the Chiefs played the Carolina Panthers was one of the most emotional games in NFL history. One day removed from the Jovan Belcher tragedy, the Chiefs found a way to beat the Panthers on December 2, 2012. The worst season in Chiefs franchise history produced that win over the Panthers, which is one of the most memorable Chiefs victories in my lifetime.
The Chiefs meet the Panthers once again in the second week of the 2014 NFL preseason. Read on for information on how to watch / listen / follow the Chiefs-Panthers game on Sunday night.

CB Damond Smith and DE Kona Schwenke are both unlikely to play. He hasn't missed any practice time but Dwayne Bowe's finger is "shot", according to Andy Reid. He is expected to play though. The Chiefs won't list an official injury report during the preseason but they will (probably) tell us shortly before the game who isn't dressing.
Odds: Panthers are 3-point favorites
Prediction: Chiefs win 23-20.
