Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid confirmed to reporters after the final training camp practice that S Eric Berry would not play in the second preseason game on Sunday night against the Carolina Panthers (H/T 610 Sports for playing the Reid audio).
Berry injured his heel, which cost him a few days earlier in camp. He re-injured the heel on Tuesday -- Reid called it tendinitis in his heel -- so it's not a big surprise Berry will sit. Berry is a veteran Pro Bowler and doesn't need camp as much as others do. If he's healthy, the rest will pay off.
Replacing Berry is a combination of players, including Daniel Sorensen. The rookie out of BYU got his first NFL start last week when Berry did not play against the Cincinnati Bengals in the preseason opener.
Also not playing on Sunday night, according to Andy Reid, is DE Mike DeVito and LB Josh Mauga. DeVito broke his hand last week while Mauga, who has been running with the second team, has a groin injury.
Reid said that CB Damond Smith and DE Kona Schwenke are both unlikely to play due to injuries but did not rule it out.
