Eric Berry, Daniel Sorensen, Jerron McMillian, Husain Abdullah, Sanders Commings, Malcolm Bronson
No team has more riding on the improvements of its safeties than the Chiefs, which sounds weird since they have a first-team All-Pro returning in Eric Berry.
Berry, Abdullah and Commings are locks to be here come September. Beyond that, it will be a dogfight for the fourth and final spot. Bronson was in camp with the team last year, so maybe he gets a long look.
Kendrick Lewis and Quintin Demps have moved on, joining the Houston Texans and New York Giants respectively via free agency. Kansas City general manager John Dorsey showed interest in Antoine Bethea but couldn't land the former Colts star, leaving Dorsey to sign a group of undrafted free agents including Sorensen and Johnson.
McMillan comes over as a free agent formerly of the Green Bay Packers. In two years with Green Bay, McMillan had 42 tackles and an interception. Bronson has no NFL stats, coming back to the Chiefs after the team cut him in camp last year.
Commings also feels like an addition after he missed almost the entire 2013 season with a broken collarbone suffered on the first play of rookie camp.
The big question
Out of Abdullah and Commings, who emerges as a better option? It seems Abdullah would be the choice, but Commings impressed this spring and has shown excellent athleticism. Both will get the opportunity to play.
Best case scenario
Abdullah plays every game like he did in the playoff game. Commings develops into a solid rotational player who sees more time as the year goes on and becomes a contributor, leaving hope for the future. Of the other five safeties, defensive coordinator Bob Sutton molds a nice player, giving Kansas City good depth.
Worst case scenario
Abdullah can't handle a starting role and Commings proves to be nothing more than a fifth round pick with marginal talent. Berry suffers an injury and this group becomes a total dumpster fire.
- First time since 2010 that Berry and Lewis will not be projected starters.
- Berry is terrified of horses ... seriously
- Abdullah went on a religious pilgrimage in 2012, missing an entire season
