Chiefs expect Jamaal Charles to show for training camp amid holdout report

KCTV-5's Brad Fanning is reporting that Jamaal Charles plans to hold out from Kansas City Chiefs training camp. Moments after Fanning's report, ESPN's Adam Teicher reported that the Chiefs have discussed a new contract with Charles and they are hopeful that he will show up to camp. The KC Star's Terez Paylor reports the Chiefs expect him to show as well.

Wow. Wow. Wow.

This news comes down on the eve of the Chiefs veteran reporting day for training camp in St. Joseph. I should note that those reports say the Chiefs "expect" Jamaal to report to camp. Not that he definitely will. We will have an answer on this by tomorrow when the veterans are expected to report to camp. The first full camp practice is on  Thursday.

According to Rotoworld, Charles December 2010 contract ended with a total value of $27.97 million over six years. Charles is due $3.9 million in 2014 with salary and bonuses. In 2015 he is due $4.75 million, including a $1 million roster bonus and in 2016 he is scheduled to be a free agent.

LeSean McCoy is a good comparison. He has a $45 million deal that averages $9 million annually.

We all knew Jamaal Charles was drastically underpaid. It's something we have recognized. That the Chiefs have reportedly talked to him about a new deal probably means they recognize it, too. The key here though, if Charles doesn't show, is that the two sides have discussed this. The Chiefs know how important Charles is to the team. A potential holdout is a serious development and something the Chiefs will seemingly have to respond to.
