The Kansas City Chiefs signed three more defensive linemen in the last 24 hours, which makes keeping up with the competition a little difficult. Cory Grissom is out, and three new players are in: Kyle Love, who already appeared the Chiefs last fall, Kona Schwenke, and Jermelle Cudjo.
Here's a rundown of the players along the defensive line currently on the roster (along with the designated position from the team's official roster).
Safe Bets:
Allen Bailey (DE), Mike Catapano (DE), Mike DeVito (DE), Dontari Poe (DT), Vance Walker (DT)
The Rest
Chas Alecxih (DT), Risean Broussard (DT), Jermelle Cudjo (DT), Dom Hamilton (DT), Jaye Howard (DT), Kyle Love (DT), Josh Martin (DE, also LB), Kona Schwenke (DT)
While I listed Allen Bailey among the safe bets, I can't say I'd be surprised if that roster spot was more up in the air than that. He certainly has the experience in the system, but a full offseason for all of these guys will make the competition for rotational spots very interesting. Others also have important experience along with a couple rookies trying to make their presence felt.
Josh Martin and Jaye Howard are also stronger bets than the newer names on the list given their presence on the roster in 2013.
Last season, the Chiefs went with six defensive linemen on the roster, but Catapano and Martin were slotted as linebackers at that time. If that carries over, the Chiefs could go up to eight slots on the roster for the defensive line. Perhaps Howard, Martin, and Love would be the picks to go with the "safe" five players above.
