We are just about one month out from the 2014 NFL Draft and we are no closer to figuring out who the Kansas City Chiefs will draft. The Chiefs haven't given us any strong indications on which way they're leaning in the NFL Draft.
The Chiefs need for a receiver is obvious, especially in an offense where Alex Smith is passing more than he ever has. Andy Reid's offenses score points and he needs a receiver to do that. Dwayne Bowe is the biggest threat here. The Chiefs lost Dexter McCluster in free agency and Donnie Avery may not cut it another season. Oh, and by the way, the Chiefs pursued Emmanuel Sanders and reportedly had some interest in DeSean Jackson.
"I think this draft is deep in terms of wide receivers with skills," Chiefs GM John Dorsey said. Dorsey continued later: "As this plan moves forward, we're going to continue to add competitive depth to our roster and that's what we do every day. We come in here and we try to find the best possible players we can."
Partial blame for the losses in the second half of the season can be blamed on the secondary. Whether it was cornerback or safety, the Chiefs secondary was a problem at times last season. Looking at the depth chart, safety might be a hole. Or the Chiefs could be hoping Sanders Commings and / or Husain Abdullah take over the role. But without knowing how they'll do, I'll file it as a hole right now.
"One of the reasons we drafted Sanders Commings is because we thought he fit that positional skill," Dorsey said recently. "I can see Husain and those guys competing, and there are some players within this draft that can help you contribute as well."
Then there's offensive line, where the Chiefs lost three starting-caliber players in free agency (Branden Albert, Jon Asamoah, Geoff Schwartz). Not everyone agrees offensive line should be a candidate in the first round but I'm never going to get that upset about building the offensive line.
"[Guard Rishaw Johnson is] going to come in here and he's going to compete," Dorsey said. "He's showed that he can play the game of football, and I'm just excited to see how much stride he has made here this year."
Another possible position is pass rusher. The Chiefs do have Justin Houston and Tamba Hali and both are primed for the 2014 season. But the Chiefs do need to plan for the future. Someone needs to be ready when Hali exits the stage. I don't think the Chiefs have that person on their roster right now and it's a really important position. Don't count this one out.
Which position will it be?
