The Kansas City Chiefs landed one player in the top 50 of player sales in the last quarter, according to the NFLPA. Jamaal Charles, No. 40 on the list, is the lone Chiefs player. Last go-round, Charles (No. 24) and Alex Smith (No. 33) were on the list, which includes sales for:
The list, released quarterly by NFLPI, the marketing and licensing arm of the NFL Players Association, is based on total overall sales of all licensed products from online and traditional retail outlets as reported by more than 70 NFLPI licensees such as Nike, VF Imagewear, Fanatics, Outerstuff, Fathead, McFarlane Toys, Oyo Sportstoys, Bleacher Creatures, Forever Collectibles and Photo File. Licensed product categories include men's, women's and youth game jerseys and t-shirts, player murals, figurines, matted and framed photos, bobbleheads, drinkware, jewelry, electronic device accessories, among others.
One Chiefs player in the top 50 of sales sounds about right. Kansas City isn't a huge market so the Chiefs need the help of fantasy football -- lookin' at you, Jamaal -- for their popularity rankings.
The biggest surprise on the list for me is Miles Austin of the Dallas Cowboys. It's been a minute since he was a top player but I suppose this is also the reason the Cowboys are on national TV as often as can be.
