2014 NFL mock draft: S Calvin Pryor to St. Louis Rams with 13th pick

With the 13th pick in the 2014 Arrowhead Pride mock draft, St. Louis Rams GM chiefsman7588 selects...

Louisville S Calvin Pryor

Fortunately for the Chiefs, our secondary was only the second most porous in the state, and that's an area that must be addressed for the Rams.  I believe the Rams are prepared to move up from the second round (ahead of the Chiefs but later in the first) with all their ammunition to get the wide receiver they also want, (I think Brandin Cooks or Marqise Lee, sorry guys). With Laughter Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix going to Tennessee at No. 11, the Rams are left with arguably the better of the top two safeties still on the board and can't pass up the opportunity to shore up the back end of a defense that features top d-line talent.

He IS the Madden hit-stick.

Calvin Pryor is being billed all the complete package and a short look at his game tape shows why. Pryor has one speed and that is BEAST MODE. He flies around the field in both pass coverage and run support, delivering some of the biggest hits I've seen, not just from a safety but from anyone. Last year alone he knocked three guys out of games with injuries. That being said, he isn't a cheap player. His hits are clean, lowering a shoulder and delivering a massive blow to everyone from wide receivers to lead blocking lineman. Pryor excels at separating the ball from the receiver at the point of reception. He IS the Madden hit-stick.

That's all great and good but how is his range and can he cover the speed in the NFL?  His 4.58 in the 40-yard dash at the Combine is not elite but not bad either. How it translates to the field more important.

He can often be seen going from center field to the sideline making plays including the interception in the video below around the 2:45 mark. Pryor starts the play just inside the hash and tracks all the way to the sideline with time to spare. Watch the whole video to see why he is the complete player.

As a former DBs coach, I would love this guy in my backfield (and in a Chiefs uniform next year). His downside is he's too much of a BEAST that he plays with too much reckless abandon. Pryor fills extremely fast and can sometimes get beat to the edge and over pursue on the cutback, but this is fixable with the right NFL coaching.

Pryor is a guy we will be hearing about a lot over the next several years. I wholly believe Calvin Pryor will be an All-Pro and one of the next great safeties in the NFL.
