The Lions already have two great interior defensive linemen with Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley. They added Ezekiel Ansah out of BYU with the fifth pick last year. He had eight sacks last year to go along with 32 total tackles.
So why did the Lions rank 28th in sacks with only 33?
Well, the reason Detroit was so porous last year is because of the secondary. I realize that the second round pick last year was CB Darius Slay but he and Chris Houston struggled. Houston especially had a very bad year grading out as the No. 96 corner out of 110 according to Pro Football Focus. What better time to relieve a 29-year old CB than with the best one in this years draft.
Oklahoma State CB Justin Gilbert
Gilbert is a press corner that has very good speed. He can be the guy to give the Lions that extra half second to get to the QB with such dangerous pass rushers. He also is a huge threat after interceptions and can also return kicks. This is the Patrick Peterson of the draft right here. Defensive coordinator Teryl Austin will inherit a defense that didn't force many turnovers last year but with this pick that is sure to change one way or the other.
