Sports Illustrated's Peter King went on the Dan Patrick Show Monday to discuss the news and rumors around free agency. One of those topics was free agent Darren Sproles, who the New Orleans Saints released last weekend. Sproles, as a veteran free agent, is free and available to sign with anyone after his release.
Enter Peter King, who wonders if the Chiefs will be involved.
"That could be a game of musical chairs too because there's a lot of teams that like that really quick, kind of flashy back," King said. "I think it depends how the Chiefs are sitting with their backfield situation once free agency shakes out. He's going to be one of those guys who will be a couple of weeks into it because he has some age on him, he's starting to decline some.
"I've gotten this thing on Twitter from people over the weekend who says he's done or [Saints RB] Khiry Robinson can take his place. Look, this guy gave the Saints 8.3 yards a touch every time he touched the ball on average. I don't think he's done. I think he was impressive in the playoffs this year in his limited role. He still has some explosive plays left in him. I think he's going to make someone a good, reasonably priced -- say $2 million a year -- acquisition."
I'm not sure there's a huge need at that position -- the Chiefs have Jamaal Charles and Knile Davis -- but the Chiefs offense did lack explosion at times and Sproles can be an explosive player. From that standpoint, it makes some sense to me.
What also has people talking is that Andy Reid and the Eagles once tried to sign Sproles before, back in 2011 before he went to the Saints.
Here's our Sproles poll last weekend:
