The Best Of 2013: Special Teams Plays from The Mothership

In our final look back at the Top Plays from the 2013 season, the Kansas City Chiefs special teams unit was nothing short of extraordinary. The Chiefs led the league in kickoff return average (30.1 yards per return), ranked fourth-best in the AFC in punting (40.2 avg) and third-best in punt return average (11.8 yards per return).

The Chiefs specialists produced five scores in 2013, as well as momentum-changing plays, which we highlight below.

Local Olympians In Sochi from The Mothership

Since football season is over, if you are anything like me, you begin to cling to whatever sport happens to be on TV. Lately, I've been watching a lot of the Olympics in Sochi and decided to do some research to see if there were any Olympic athletes who may also be Chiefs fans. Come to find out, there are three Olympians, from either Kansas or Missouri.

Chiefs Re-Sign TE Richard Gordon from Chiefs Spin

The Chiefs re-signed tight end Richard Gordon to a one-year contract earlier in the week, Gordon's agent confirmed Friday in a phone interview.

"We are excited about continuing with the Chiefs," agent Alonzo Shavers said. "We look forward to contributing to Kansas City's goal of a Super Bowl."

The Savings (Or Cost) OF Roster Cuts from ESPN

Some fans would like to see the Kansas City Chiefs release a high-priced player or two in order for the Chiefs to clear some room under the NFL's salary limit. While the Chiefs might restructure a contract or two, I'm not sure they will part with any of their pricey players purely for the cost savings.

But let's take a look at how much the Chiefs would save (or not save) by cutting some of the players who are costing them the most against the salary cap.

23. Kansas City Chiefs: Odell Beckham, Jr., WR, LSU

The Chiefs are in need of some more playmakers. They surprised everyone last year with the steady game management of Alex Smith under the tutelage of Andy Reid. They won't surprise anyone next year and Beckham Jr. can help on the offensive side of the ball.

Bucs Sign TE Maneri, CB Moore from Buccaneers.com

On Friday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers made added two veteran players to theirs, signing tight end Steve Maneri and cornerback D.J. Moore.  Both Maneri and Moore played in the NFL in 2013, but neither was on a roster at the end of the season and thus could be signed by any team before the start of the 2014 free agency period.
