The 2013 Kansas City Chiefs were known as a team that only beat a bunch of bad teams. They didn't make their own schedule so you can't blame them all that much for that.
Some might say the 2014 Chiefs are better because they have beat some of the good teams. No, they haven't beaten the Broncos, who swept Kansas City this year. But they have beaten other playoff contenders.
I came across this tweet from Pats Pulpit's Richard Hill the other day, and it puts into perspective how the Chiefs have done against other playoff-caliber teams.
Here's how teams in the playoff hunt (not including the NFC South) fare against each other pic.twitter.com/iwQcEOBdx6

Those five wins came against the Patriots, Seahawks, Chargers, Dolphins and Bills, who are all "in the hunt" for the playoffs, some more so than others. Those five losses came against the Broncos (twice) and 49ers. Two of those three games the Chiefs had the ball in the fourth quarter with a chance to tie.
I know Chiefs fans are not in a good place right now after their sixth consecutive loss to the Broncos but once you step back you can see that they have been competitive with playoff-caliber teams. If only they could win a playoff game....
