Justin Houston tops Derrick Thomas, sets new Chiefs sack record with 22

Update: Houston now has four sacks on the day and 22 on the season.

The Kansas City Chiefs franchise had one of the best pass rushers in history in the late Derrick Thomas. They now have one of the best pass rushers in today's game in Justin Houston.

Houston's third sack on Philip Rivers in Sunday's game beat Thomas' franchise record of 20 sacks in a season. Thomas set the record in 1990 with 20 sacks; Houston topped him 24 years later with 21 sacks.

That he is tying records set by Derrick Thomas shows how special Justin Houston is. It also shows how damn expensive he will be. He is arguably the best pass rusher in the NFL right now and he is set to become a free agent at the end of the season. There is a zero percent chance he goes anywhere -- the Chiefs will franchise him if they don't reach a long-term deal -- but it's still a tenuous situation considering how much money we're talking about here.

Houston also became fourth on the Chiefs all-time sacks list.
