The Kansas City Chiefs were in a tie with the Denver Broncos for first place in the AFC West at 7-3 just three days ago. With the Chiefs losing on Thursday night their record drops to 7-4 and a half game behind in the AFC West to the Broncos, who currently hold the tiebreaker in the division with a head to head win over the Chiefs.
Before the Chiefs play the Broncos next week, Denver hosts the Miami Dolphins in the late afternoon game today. A Broncos win and Denver is a full game ahead of the Chiefs, which means the Chiefs would need to go plus-two on the Broncos the rest of the way given the tiebreaker situation (Denver will lead in the division tiebreaker).
If the Broncos lose to the Dolphins ... well, that would be a big freakin' deal. Things would be reset. The Oakland game may not matter as much because the Chiefs would be tied with the Broncos again and have a chance to take sole possession of first place next Sunday. That would make a night game at Arrowhead with first place on the line completely bonkers.
That is obviously the most ideal situation here and the reason all Chiefs fans today should be rooting for the Dolphins. It'll be tough because the Broncos are 6.5-point favorites and they're playing at home.
SB Nation's Dolphins blog is The Phinsider, so you may want to check them out for the game, which starts at 3:25 p.m. (Arrowhead Time) on CBS.
