The Kansas City Chiefs were able to keep most of their coaching staff and front office intact after their 11-win season last year. They may not be so lucky next year.
The NY Daily News' Gary Myers writes today about the turmoil in New York with Jets head coach Rex Ryan and GM John Idzik. In the piece, he mentions two names of interest to the Chiefs as possible GM replacements for the Jets.
The first being Chiefs exec Chris Ballard.
Two sources predicted Tuesday that Chris Ballard, the Chiefs director of player personnel, will be the hottest GM candidate after the season.
His name popped up last year in connection with the Bucs GM job but he reportedly declined to be interviewed because he would not have final say (Lovie Smith did).
The second being former Chiefs GM Scott Pioli, who is now in Atlanta.
If Johnson goes for a candidate with experience, I think Scott Pioli, the assistant GM in Atlanta, is the best choice. He will have learned from his four years (2009-12) as the Chiefs GM.
Of course, the Jets have not fired their GM and Rex Ryan is still the head coach. We don't know much about the inner workings of the Chiefs front office so I can't tell you what Ballard's strengths and weaknesses are but if he was mentioned for a job last year ... he'll probably be mentioned for another one this year.
