Chiefs Plan For Strong Preseason Finish from The Mothership

Coach Reid shared how he's approached previous fourth preseason games.

"I've done it all different ways," coach Reid said. "I've sat the ones, I've played the ones for a series, for a quarter, I've done it all. The main thing you want to do though on this is to make sure with the guys that are remaining on this team, that you get a good evaluation of the players, so at the end of this thing, you're making the right moves that you feel are right for the Chiefs. I'm not going to let that get in the way. I'm going to make sure we get that accomplished the best that we can."

On June 13, after three years with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Lane was waived to clear space on the roster.

"This game is about business," Lane says.

Just a few days before, Lane had been asked by Sports Illustrated's Peter King to write a guest column for the magazine's website. Lane, a journalism major in college, had agreed. But now he had experienced the hurt of being discarded for the first time. So as he sat down at his computer and began to write, the words flowed out. Lane, who the Jaguars didn't think fit their scheme, wrote what it felt like to be cut.

"It was a hard thing to write," Lane says now. "Because you're writing about failure. And I was hesitant at first to do it. But eventually, after writing it, I felt a lot better. It was almost therapeutic."

Chiefs Roster Predictions, Part I: Offense, Specialists from ESPN

The Chiefs, like all NFL teams, must trim their active roster from 75 to 53 players by Saturday evening.

20. Kansas City Chiefs (2-14): Underperforming KC should be much better under Andy Reid. They have talent, with six Pro Bowlers, and a strong pass defence. If Alex Smith sees a career revival and Jamaal Charles stays healthy, both plausible, this could be a wild card contender.

Player to watch:  Alex Smith and Wes Welker.  Too close to call to pick just one. Alex Smith, under new head coach Andy Reid in Kansas City, hopes to have a fresh start under a partial pistol offense.  How that will work, who knows, but KC is willing to try.  Reid must use the approach that Jim Harbaugh did in San Francisco, which is to allow Smith to manage the game, not go out and win it.  Smith is the key to the Chiefs' playoff hopes.
