NFL roster cuts: Ricky Stanzi among 14 KC Chiefs players released

The Kansas City Chiefs announced 14 roster cuts, including the release of Ricky Stanzi and Terrance Copper. Braden Wilson, a sixth round pick, is the only Chiefs 2013 draft pick released. After these 14 cuts, the Chiefs have 76 players on the roster, which means one more cut is still coming.

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

The Ricky Stanzi era is over in Kansas City. I repeat: The Stanzi era is over.  The KC Chiefs cut the fourth quarterback out of Iowa on Sunday night. Stanzi threw 12 passes in the Chiefs first preseason game in New Orleans then did not see any snaps in the last two games. This means that Tyler Bray has apparently beaten Stanzi out for the Chiefs third team job, which is what we all expected considering Bray has consistently been taking snaps over him in training camp.

The rest of the cuts, including the previously reported release Terrance Copper, can be seen below:

CB Vince Agnew
DE Miguel Chavis
WR Terrance  Copper
OL Ryan Durand
OL Hutch Eckerson
DB Otha Foster III
OL AJ Hawkins
DE Rob Lohr
CB Kamaal McIlwain
RB Jordan Roberts
WR Tyler Shoemaker
DB Neiko Thorpe
FB Braden Wilson

Observations from the cuts:

-The Chiefs will still need to make a practice squad next week so some of these names could be coming back.

-Biggest surprises (so far) are Terrance Copper and then Neiko Thorpe...

-...but those aren't big surprises either.

-There is one draft pick on the list -- Braden Wilson, picked in the sixth round this year.

Chiefs GM John Dorsey was quoted on the cuts: "This is always a difficult time of year. We have to make decisions that we feel are in the best interest of our football team and unfortunately this is part of the process. These gentlemen have put in a lot of hard work and effort for our franchise, and we wish them nothing but the best moving forward."

Previously Dorsey called cut down day "emotional, hard times." . Andy Reid also commented on the cuts, saying, "That's a tough deal. These guys have busted their tails at their profession. We wish them all the best of luck when they leave here that they have an opportunity to go place someplace else.

"You never know in this business, you could be coming right back. It's a crazy day."
