The Chiefs and 49ers and Alex Smith traded was completed in March even though we'd known for weeks before that that it was coming. The 49ers already used the Chiefs 2013 second round pick, which was part of the trade. Also included in the trade, as you all know, was a 2014 draft pick.
We did not know the details of that 2014 draft pick until now. According to SI's Peter King, if the Chiefs go 8-8 or better next season, they will give up their 2014 second round pick. If the Chiefs are under .500, the pick will be a third rounder.
That will sting in about 11 months when we're creating our 2014 mock drafts. Of course, by that point we'll have a pretty good idea by the end of this season whether the trade was the right move or not. Even if Smith is a star, it's a tough pill to swallow to give up a draft pick a year in advance.
I have this exclusive response from David Fucillo of our 49ers blog, Niners Nation: "GO CHIEFS!"
What's your guess -- are the Chiefs giving up their second or third round pick?
