Chiefs 2013 schedule will NOT be released on Tuesday

Update: The Chiefs 2013 schedule has been released.

It was believed that the 2013 NFL schedule release would be coming on Tuesday, April 16. A new report says that's not the case. A release date has not yet been determined.

Surprise! The 2013 NFL schedule is not coming tomorrow, according to Pro Football Talk. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello tells PFT that the release date, which many had thought was coming on Tuesday, is actually not coming on Tuesday.

"It will not be tomorrow but could be in the next week or two," Aiello told PFT. "We're working to finalize it."

Well then. That's a surprise. The NFL schedule release usually comes in April before the draft. Delaying by a week or two could put the schedule release after the draft. That doesn't particularly matter because teams probably aren't making draft decisions based on one year's schedule, but it is a departure from the way it's been done in previous years.

The NFL Draft is a week and a half away on April 25. At this point, I would prefer that the schedule release come after the draft. At this point, we're all wrapped up in the draft and our focus is on who will be called No. 1 on April 25 from Radio City Music Hall. I would argue the NFL should release the schedule sometime in early May. Selfishly, from a coverage standpoint, it makes more sense for fans to focus on the draft now and have something to look forward to in May.

It's not clear what's causing the delay in the schedule release. NFL Network had a schedule release show planned for Tuesday, which is why many figured it would come on that day.

So now we wait.

As a reminder, here's the Chiefs 2013 preseason schedule:

Week 1 (Aug. 8-11): at Saints
Week 2 (Aug. 15-19): 49ers
Week 3 (Aug. 22-25): at Steelers
Week 4 (Aug. 29-30): Packers

And their 2013 opponents and locations:

Home: Denver Broncos, San Diego Chargers, Oakland Raiders, Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Cleveland Browns, Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants

Away: Denver Broncos, San Diego Chargers, Oakland Raiders, Jacksonville Jaguars, Tennessee Titans, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins, Buffalo Bills
