Vontae Davis is a cornerback for the Indianapolis Colts, who traded for him last year. He used to be with the Miami Dolphins, who drafted him in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft.
Sean Smith (not that Shaun Smith) is a cornerback for the Miami Dolphins. His contract expires on March 12, at which point he will become a free agent.
Davis tweeted this (screen grabbed in case he deletes it):
Neat! The Chiefs have a big, gaping hole at the cornerback spot opposite Brandon Flowers. They probably won't take a cornerback No. 1. And with the Alex Smith trade they don't have a second round pick anymore. So free agency might be where the Chiefs find their next starting cornerback. Smith is one of the top cornerbacks on the market, which means he is going to get paid a lot of money. It makes sense though that Andy Reid would be interested. Look what he did in Philly, acquiring players like Domonique Rodgers-Cromartie and Nnamdi Asomugha. He likes using free agency for cornerbacks.
But wait! Sean Smith talking to Brandon Flowers and the Chiefs would be tampering. That's not allowed. Until March 12, Smith is property of the Dolphins, who have exclusive negotiating rights with Smith until free agency (or, a three-day window before free agency begins, to be more specific). That's why this would be called tampering if you follow the letter of the law.
Better walk this one back.
He was hacked.
I mean ... of course he was.
Update: Sean Smith's explanation sounds a little believable:
Ok this is getting out of hand, I've never talked to any other team besides the Miami Dolphins. Yes I talked to vontae and I told him Al Harris (our former coach) got the job up in KC and that I talked to him a few days ago to tell him congrats. That's it! Now why he interpreted that as "talking to KC" idk but there is NOTHING going on! This is ridiculous
