Chiefs-Chargers final score: Kansas City's back-ups take it to overtime but San Diego wins, 27-24

The Kansas City Chiefs came close but they couldn't beat the San Diego Chargers in Week 17. The 27-24 overtime win gave the Chargers a playoff berth. The Chiefs played backups at 20 of 22 positions because they were already locked into the No. 5 seed in the playoffs. Read on for a drive-by-drive recap of the Chiefs loss to the Chargers.

FIRST QUARTER

Chiefs 1st drive: Touchdown (Chiefs lead 7-0)

Knile Davis picked up 12 yards with a strong run to the right side.

Chase Daniel nearly got picked off on his first pass attempt.

Daniel hit AJ Jenkins deep down the right sideline for a 48-yard gain.

SCORE: Davis busted through the line for a 17-yard touchdown run. Chiefs lead 7-0.

Chargers 1st drive: Touchdown (7-7)

Ryan Mathews picked up 44 yards after a nice burst down the left side.

SCORE: Philip Rivers hit Lardarius Green in the corner of the end zone for a touchdown. Rivers was pressured by Mike Catapano, who bull-rushed the Chargers offensive lineman pretty well.

Chiefs 2nd drive: Punt

Daniel ran the read option and kept it for a short gain.

Daniel was sacked by Corey Liuget. The Chiefs young offensive line looks shaky.

Chargers 2nd drive: Interception

James-Michael Johnson picked up the first sack of the day for the Chiefs.

Ron Parker picked off Rivers over the middle of the field. Parker was player corner against Keenan Allen and Rivers just threw a bad ball.

Chiefs 3rd drive: Touchdown (Chiefs lead 14-7)

Chiefs started on the Chargers 23-yard line thanks to the turnover.

Hemingway also fumbled the ball on that play as he tried to put the ball in his other hand, but he picked it back up.

SCORE: Dexter McCluster came into the game and Daniel threw him a quick pass from two yards out for the score. Chiefs lead 14-7.

Chargers 3rd drive: Touchdown (14-14)

Rivers hit Keenan Allen for 24 yards and then Eddie Royal for 30 yards as the Chargers drive down the field.

SCORE: Rivers hit Antonio Gates for a short touchdown. Kendrick Lewis was in coverage and the Chiefs sent the house on the play. Game is tied at 14-14.

SECOND QUARTER

Chiefs 4th drive: Punt

AJ Jenkins sighting. He picked up 14 yards and a first down over the middle.

The Chiefs punted it away.

Chargers 4th drive: Punt

The Chiefs defense finally forces a punt.

Chiefs 5th drive: Touchdown (Chiefs lead 21-14)

Daniel scrambled for a 29-yard gain.

Davis is a big load. He carries the ball with both hands and drives himself into the defender.

The Chiefs keep feeding Davis to get into the red zone.

SCORE: Davis punches it in for a five-yard touchdown. Chiefs lead 21-14.

Chargers 5th drive: Punt

San Diego gets the ball back with under two minutes left in the first half but can't do anything and must punt it away.

Chiefs 6th drive: Halftime

Chiefs had less than a minute at the start of the drive but didn't have enough time to do anything.

THIRD QUARTER

Chargers 6th drive: Punt

The Chargers went three-and-out and punted.

Chiefs 7th drive: Punt

Chiefs also go three-and-out and punt it back.

Chargers 7th drive: Punt

Yet another punt.

Chiefs 8th drive: Field goal (Chiefs lead 24-14)

Chargers 8th drive: Punt

Punt!

Chiefs 9th drive: Punt

Daniel scrambles and dives head first for the first down. After he got up, he got into it with the Chargers defender!

Daniel is sacked on third down and the Chiefs punt.

FOURTH QUARTER

Chargers 9th drive: Touchdown (Chiefs lead 24-21)

The Chargers converted two straight third down attempts.

SCORE: Rivers threw a touchdown pass on the drive's 10th play. Chiefs lead 24-21.

Chiefs 10th drive: Punt

Kansas City's second half offensive struggles continue with a punt.

Chargers 10th drive: Field goal (24-24)

That crossing route returns as Rivers hits Keenan Allen for 38 yards and moving the Chargers into the red zone.

SCORE: Chargers kick the field goal with 3:21 left to tie the game at 24.

Chiefs 11th drive: Missed field goal

With 3:21 left and a tie game, Daniel starts it off with a 14-yard pass to McCluster, 11 yards to Sean McGrath and 24 yards to Junior Hemingway.

The Chiefs ran a Wild Cat with Cyrus Gray at quarterback and he picked up the first down.

Ryan Succop MISSED a 41-yard field goal as time expired.

OVERTIME

San Diego starts with the ball.

Chargers 12th drive: Field goal (27-24)

Somehow, San Diego kept this drive alive and moved into field goal range.

SCORE: The Chargers kicked a field goal to make it 27-24 with 5:30 remaining in overtime.

Chiefs 12th drive: End of game

The drive starts with a 28-yard strike to McCluster.

The Chiefs got into field goal range but the drive stalls and on 4th-and-15, the Chiefs go incomplete and the game ends.

FINAL SCORE: CHARGERS WIN, 27-24
