Chiefs roster move: Sanders Commings to IR, Josh Martin to active roster

On the eve of Broncos-Chiefs, Kansas City has made a roster move. Sanders Commings heads to IR while Josh Martin gets a spot on the active roster.

KC Chiefs rookie safety Sanders Commings' season is over. The Chiefs put the fifth round pick on injured reserve, officially ending his season. In his place, linebacker Josh Martin was promoted from the practice squad.

The Chiefs had high hopes for Commings before he broke his collarbone shortly before training camp. The team placed him on the IR-designated to return list and he did return to the roster after eight weeks and then promptly re-injured his shoulder.

Martin actually made the Chiefs 53-man roster out of training camp. He was an undrafted player out of Columbia who signed with the Chiefs after last April's NFL Draft.

The Chiefs play the Broncos on Sunday at 3:25 p.m. (Arrowhead Time).

Here is each player's bio from the Chiefs:

Martin (6-3, 245) joined the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent on May 13, 2013. He was inactive for the club's first three games and then moved to the team's practice squad. Prior to joining the Chiefs, he played in 30 games for Columbia University (N.Y.), tallying 140 tackles (85 solo), 29.5 tackles for loss, 17.5 sacks (-118.0 yards), two forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries and two passes defensed. Martin prepped at Cherokee Trail High School in Aurora, Colo.

Commings (6-0, 223) joined the Chiefs as the club's fifth-round pick (134th overall) in the 2013 NFL Draft. He has played in two games with Kansas City in 2013 recording one solo tackle. Commings spent the first nine weeks of the 2013 season on injured reserve with the designation to return. He appeared in 54 games (35 starts) at Georgia, recording 154 tackles (113 solo), 1.0 sack (-7.0 yards), six tackles for loss, three QB pressures, one forced fumble and three fumble recoveries. He added eight interceptions and 17 passes defensed. Commings was a multi-sport standout at Westside High School in Augusta, Ga. While in high school, he was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 37th round of the 2008 MLB Amateur Draft.
