Chiefs' Andy Reid: We needed touchdowns, not field goals against Broncos

Here is Andy Reid talking to reporters after the Chiefs lost to the Broncos:

"That's a good football team and they got us today," Reid said. "We'll bounce back and learn from our mistakes. Plenty of things we can learn from and get those fixed. To start with, when you have an opportunity to score touchdowns against this team, you need to score touchdowns and not kick field goals."

Some might then wonder why Reid decided to punt the ball away when down 14 points on the Broncos 42-yard line with just under 12 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

"We did a nice job with the turnover in scoring position on their side of the field but we gave it right back to them with the turnover on the next play so yo can't do those things," Reid continued.

Imagine if the Chiefs don't fumble that ball back to Denver. The Broncos had a three-point lead with just over five minutes left in the first quarter at that point. A touchdown by the Chiefs there -- the drive started on the Broncos 18-yard line -- could've changed the flow of the game.

"Too many penalties, way too many penalties," Reid said. "There are a lot of things we can work on and we will work on and get ourselves better."

The referee crew coming in had more penalties called than any other crew in the NFL.

"We had opportunities there to score points off of the stops that they made and we didn't do that offensively," Reid said. "I thought our defense, gave us, especially to start the second half, two or three stops there. Two of those, the field position was in our favor. We need to take full advantage of that."

Those drives at the start of the second half stand out to me. Maybe more so than any other point in the game. The Chiefs repeatedly dropped the ball after their defense was doing an excellent job against Peyton.

"We didn't do a good enough job offensively when we had the ball," Reid said. "That's my responsibility to make sure those things happen. We're a young football team. We'll get it worked out and fixed and we'll get better next week."

Reid always takes responsibility when something doesn't go right. We'll get used to this.
