History says the 5-0 Kansas City Chiefs are likely playoff-bound

The KC Chiefs are one of three unbeaten teams through five weeks of the season. Find out why history says the playoffs are likely.

Jim Brown-USA TODAY Sports

The KC Chiefs beat the Tennessee Titans, 26-17, on Sunday afternoon and continued this incredible start. Let's just hop right into this updated stat that everyone has been waiting for:

90 percent of 5-0 teams make the playoffs.

According to Darren Rovell, 37 percent of those teams go to the Super Bowl.

This dates back to 1990 when the current playoff format was set-up. There have been 40 teams that have started 5-0 in those 23 years. 36 of those teams made the playoffs.

Oh, how sweet this is.

The New Orleans Saints and Denver Broncos are the other two 5-0 teams. Folks will look at these three teams and the think to themselves, "Which one of these is unlike the other..." But whatever. 5-0 is 5-0 and it's very hard for someone to claim that type of record is fluky or not real. Oh, it's real all right.

How long can each team stay unbeaten?

Saints next 3 games: at New England, Bye, Buffalo

Broncos next 3 games: Jacksonville, at Indy, Washington

Chiefs next 3 games: Oakland, Houston, Cleveland

The Chiefs could be favored in every game the rest of the way. New Orleans travels to New England, which is one of the toughest places to try and win in the NFL. The Broncos just have Peyton Manning's return to Indy, home of a very good Colts team. They will be jacked for that.

The real story here is the playoffs. KC just needs to keep adding wins to secure that playoff spot.
