KC Chiefs' Justin Houston named AFC defensive player of the month

The NFL players of the month for September include KC Chiefs LB Justin Houston, and two Denver Broncos.

It's fitting that it's the Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos represented in the AFC players of the month for September. KC Chiefs LB Justin Houston won the award on defense, Broncos QB Peyton Manning picked it up for offense and Broncos return man Trindon Holliday was the winner for special teams.

A Chief won the AFC player of the week award three times this month -- Justin Houston won it twice (Week 1 and Week 3) for defense while Dexter McCluster (Week 4) picked it up for special teams and his 89-yard beauty of a return last weekend against the New York Giants.

Houston's selection is well deserved. He is currently tied with Robert Mathis for the league lead in sacks with 7.5 sacks. The next closest has 5.5 sacks. He had three in Week 1 against the Jaguars and 4.5 more against the Eagles in Week 3. Even last week when he didn't record a sack he was pressuring Eli Manning consistently.

Manning's selection is also, unfortunately, well deserved. Mile High Report runs down all the big stats for Manning in September.

Next up for Houston is a date with the Titans, whose fan base is already talking about his arrival.
