NFL trade deadline: KC Chiefs have only a few more hours to dream about Tony Gonzalez

Taking one last look at Tony Gonzalez ahead of Tuesday's NFL trade deadline.

Matt Kartozian-USA TODAY Sports

I'm not sayin'. I'm just sayin'.

A few weeks ago as KC Chiefs fans clamored for the team to trade for Tony Gonzalez (which was solely a fan-driven idea), Tony Gonzalez himself said that he does NOT want that to happen. The Falcons head coach, Mike Smith, called the idea of a trade "preposterous". Even Andy Reid and John Dorsey seemed to indicate that wasn't on their radar.

There is no evidence that the Chiefs are trying to trade for Tony G. ahead of Tuesday's 3 p.m. (Arrowhead Time) trade deadline, but the attitude of Tony G. seems to have changed just a little bit.

From saying he does not want to be traded, Tony G. now says (via ESPN):

"When Jimmy Johnson says that it would be respectful of [the Falcons], I see that," Gonzalez said about Johnson, the Fox analyst who said the Falcons should sit down with Gonzalez and ask him whether he wants to play for a contender. "And like I said, if that's something they wanted to do and they asked me, then, yeah, I would listen to them, of course. Yes, I would sit down with them. You've always got to listen to them in anything. I don't care if you're not open to it or [are], you still listen and see what's up."

And:

"We'll know by [4] o'clock [Tuesday]," Gonzalez said. "But, like I said, I'm not going to be the one to go asking for a trade. It will have to come from them."

Another good one: Jay Glazer reported that Andy Reid's Eagles were in the running for Tony G. in 2008, a few months before he was traded to the Falcons.

Unfortunately, Adam Schefter has this to say:

I think deep down we all know this isn't happening ... but we only have a few more hours to dream about it .
