Kansas City Chiefs by the numbers: Wins, sacks and offensive worries

The Chiefs are 8-0. Those are the only numbers that really matter. But for a bit more explanation of how the team is winning this season, here's a closer look By The Numbers.

Peter Aiken

8

If you're looking any at number, you have to start with this one. Eight wins in eight games. A historic turnaround. It's the first time in Andy Reid's career he's reached 8-0 in his 15-year career. With a win in Week 9, the Chiefs will tie a franchise best start to a season. The 2003 team did the same and finished at 13-3.

1,018

Jamaal Charles is currently tied with LeSean McCoy in total yards from scrimmage wtih 1,018 total yards. There are 60 instances in NFL history of a player reaching 2,000 yards from scrimmage, which means Charles is on pace to join some elite company. Interestingly enough, Charles only has 100 yard rushing game this season.

17

To this point, the Chiefs haven't allowed any opponent to score more than 17 points in a game. ESPN Stats & Info pointed out after Sunday's win over the Browns that they are the only team since the 1977 Atlanta Falcons to allow 17 points or less through the first half of the regular season. The Falcons hold the record with nine consecutive games.

24

That's the number of sacks Alex Smith has taken this season, eighth most in the NFL. Last year, the Chiefs gave up 40 total sacks on the season, so they're on pace to eclipse that total by several. It could be worse. Ryan Tannehill has endured 32 sacks for the Miami Dolphins in just seven games.

98

The Chiefs are second the NFL in points allowed, just behind the Carolina Panthers at 96. However the Panthers have already had their bye week, so that total is skewed since the Panthers have only faced 7 opponents. The next closest team who has played eight games is 144 (Bengals, Patriots). As for the Chiefs, the total of 98 points through 8 games is the fifth fewest total in franchise history.

30.4

That's the percentage of offensive drives that lead to a score for the Chiefs, a total that places KC at No. 20 on the list. The league's worst team is the Jaguars, who score only 18.1 percent of the time. As for the Denver Broncos? Yeah, they score on 49.1 percent of all drives.

+12

The Chiefs fared far better in the early season in turnover differential since they had none of their own through the first few games. However the Chiefs are still tops in the NFL in turnover ratio at +12. The worst teams both reside in the Big Apple. The New York Giants and New York Jets are both -12 on the season.
