Branden Albert wants to be a Chief, doesn't want to be a guard

Chiefs left tackle Branden Albert called into the Danny Parkins show on 610 Sports on Tuesday, covering all the key questions like where his contract situation stands, the status of his injury and whether he would consider moving to guard.

Albert is as clueless as anyone about his contract situation

So, Albert, what is your contract situation?

"I don't know the situation. I'm as clueless as everyone else." And again: "I don't know. I really don't know. I have no clue."

Albert of course is an impending free agent in March. The big question is whether the Chiefs will bring him back -- under the franchise tag or a new deal -- or whether they'll let him walk, possibly drafting Luke Joeckel with the No. 1 overall pick.

What Albert wants is to stay in Kansas City.

"Of course [I want to stay in Kansas City]," Albert said. "I've been here five years, I was drafted by the Chiefs. My home is there, been living there, and Chiefs fans for the most part have been kind to me. I want to be a Chief."

He said he has not yet talked to Andy Reid or John Dorsey but that his agent has talked to Dorsey. He didn't want to share where they stand but did say they are talking.

Albert says he is healthy, isn't injury prone

One of the questions that has come up complicating the question of Albert's longterm deal is his health. He missed some time this year with a back issue, which has brought up the question of how much you want to invest in him.

"I'm feeling pretty good," Albert told Parkins. "I just needed to get the proper rest I couldnt get during the season because I was trying to come back and finish the season strong."

Is the back issue a longterm problem?

"No. Not at all. That's the honest truth man. It's just something that happened to happen tme this year. I've never had back problems before. For the most part I've been healthy in my career. i feel like I'm fine. I'm working out, I feel fine."

Albert does NOT want to move to guard

He calls the notion of him moving to guard "ludicrous."

"I've worked hard to be a left tackle in this league. I've worked hard on my craft. from where I started to where I'm at now is a hell of a jump. I'm not a guard. Point blank."

Albert was extremely passionate when saying he's left tackle, not a guard. A few choice quotes:

"I haven't played guard since college."

"It kind of upsets me a lot. I'll be the first one to tell you. Sometimes it bothers me."
