Super Bowl 2013 is a short two weeks away and, as you may have noticed, the Kansas City Chiefs are not in the big game. It has been 15,716 days since the Kansas City Chiefs were last in a Super Bowl and 6,945 days since the Chiefs last won a playoff game. The Ravens, Patriots, 49ers and Falcons are all battling for a trip to New Orleans today. Click here for the Championship game schedule. We'll update this post after today's games are final.
The Kansas City Chiefs had matchups with two of the four teams in the Championship games today, losing to the Atlanta Falcons in Week 1 and to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 5.
Should they win today, this would be the eighth Super Bowl appearance for the Patriots, tying the Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys for the most all-time in Super Bowl history. It would be the second Super Bowl appearance for both the Baltimore Ravens and Atlanta Falcons. This would be the 49ers sixth Super Bowl appearance. The Kansas City Chiefs have two total Super Bowl appearances.
The Atlanta Falcons or the San Francisco 49ers will be the home team this year, with that designation alternating between the AFC team in even-numbered games and the NFC team in odd-numbered games.
This year's Super Bowl will take place at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, LA. This will be the tenth time that a Super Bowl has been hosted in New Orleans, which is the most for an individual city. New Orleans is tied with Miami for the metropolitan area that has hosted the most Super Bowls (10). The last time a Super Bowl was hosted in New Orleans was 2002.
One interesting note is that the 2013 Mardi Gras schedule for Orleans parish will be changed in light of the schedule. "With the 2013 Super Bowl in New Orleans falling on what would be the first big parade weekend, the Carnival kickoff will start one week earlier," says the Times-Picayune. This time of year in New Orleans has the unfortunate nickname of "Super Gras."
CBS will televise the game in the United States; CTV in Canada; and by the BBC in the United Kingdom. As is the case seemingly every year, there will reportedly be a new record cost for a Super Bowl commercial: $4,000,000 for each thirty-second spot. A review of what companies are buying advertising this year can be found at AdAge.com.
