One of the first questions asked by fans this morning when the Kansas City Chiefs signed Abe Elam is what safety position he plays -- strong safety or free safety. That may be simplifying things a little too much. Elam said on Monday that he can play both safety positions.
"In the NFL, you have to be interchangeable with the way things motion and guys move around, so I consider myself a safety that can play both spots," Elam said, via comments sent out by the Chiefs.
This allows Elam to be a backup at both safety positions, giving the Chiefs more -- buzz word alert -- versatility. After last year the Chiefs learned you need as much depth as possible. It was obvious safety was an area of concern after they worked out Elam and other veterans like O.J. Atogwe and Yeremiah Bell.
Elam described himself as a "smart player" and said that the Chiefs were a "great opportunity. I feel like it's a team that's up on the rise and very competitive, a great defense. I think we're putting things together here in Kansas City."
As for getting back on the field, Elam said, "It's like riding a bicycle - once you know how to do it, you can do it."
The bicycle better be ready to roll. Elam might be the top safety on the field right now with both Eric Berry and Kendrick Lewis out.
