Chiefs Free Agent Options On Defense

The Kansas City Chiefs have already started looking at veteran free agents with Dallas Clark and O.J. Atogwe visiting the team this week. I tracked down a list of the best available free agents at every position to see if there were any other players the Chiefs could pursue.

Here's the list of best available free agents on defense. I skimmed the list for a few highlights, which are listed below. The Cliff's Notes: not much out there to pick from.

At defensive tackle, the free agents are led by Aubrayo Franklin and Albert Haynesworth. We all remember Franklin, who was the 49ers franchise tag player in 2010, sought a longterm contract, and then played in New Orleans last year on a one-year deal. Haynesworth...just no.

At defensive end, I see Shaun Ellis' name who was a longtime Jet before joining the Patriots last year. James Hall and Jimmy Wilkerson are a few of the other names out there. I could see the Chiefs adding some depth here but only if it's worth it. I'm not sure any of these guys will interest the Chiefs.

At inside linebacker, E.J. Henderson and James Farrior are available. The Chiefs have Jovan Belcher next to DJ, and Brandon Siler will provide competition. Given the choice between Belcher and Siler competing for a spot, or throwing a veteran in there, I'll go with Belcher/Siler.

At outside linebacker, Joey Porter's name pops out at me. I will quit the Chiefs if they sign him. Ernie Sims is another recognizable name out there.

At safety, O.J. Atogwe is one of the top names and he visited the Chiefs this week. He had a big-money deal from the Redskins just last year so he could be terrific depth as a position with two players coming off injury. Jon McGraw is also a free agent.

At cornerback, Domonique Foxworth, the new NFLAP president, leads the list. Bryant McFadden is an interesting name, too.
