Demorrio Williams Released By The Chiefs

I can't prove this but I was just writing a blog post about potential salary cap casualties for the Kansas City Chiefs and I looked at Demorrio Williams' 2012 cap number, which was $2.3 million, and figured he'd be a candidate to be released.

And before my story is ready, the Chiefs announce they've released Demorrio Williams. This marks the first release of the offseason. Free agency starts on March 13.

Adam Caplan reports the Chiefs will save $1.7 million in cap space with the move.

He was playing primarily a special teams role (and a good one at that) but that role is replaceable. A lot of draft picks and undrafted free agents are competing for that special teams spot every year.

Williams is 31 years old. He originally came to KC on a five year deal in the 2008 free agency period. He started ahead of Derrick Johnson in 2009 before DJ took his spot and he was a backup the next two seasons.
