Arrowheadlines: Chiefs News 3/5

Good morning! Here is today's Kansas City Chiefs news. Be sure to keep checking back throughout the day for updates on how (or if) the Chiefs use their franchise tag. The deadline for that use is 3:00pm today (Arrowhead time). Enjoy.

It comes as no surprise that Monday's 3:00 PM (CST) franchise tag deadline is closing in with the Chiefs yet to act. Hurrying to designate a franchise player offers no advantage to the team...

..When the Chiefs signed free agent CB Stanford Routt last month, Bowe became the overwhelming favorite to receive the tag.

But tagging Bowe isn't a lock. Signing the Pro Bowler to a long-term contract extension in advance of Monday's deadline would tilt the balance of Kansas City's free agent situation heading into 2012.

Pushing Franchise Tag Decision To Deadline Makes Sense For Chiefs from The Mothership

Jeff Roebuck from Wichita, Kan., wants to know if there is any way the Chiefs could package Dwayne Bowe in a deal to St. Louis in an attempt to draft quarterback Robert Griffin III with the No. 2 pick.

Bill Williamson: It's an interesting thought. I think the Kansas City Chiefs would love to get a chance to take Griffin, but they will have a hard time putting together a winning package. Teams such as the Cleveland Browns, Washington Redskins and Miami Dolphins will all offer better trades. The Chiefs have the No. 11 pick in the draft and the three other teams all pick higher in the first round. Adding Bowe would sweeten the pot.

We're less than 24 hours away from the NFL's franchise tag deadline (Monday, 4:00 PM ET) as several clubs have yet to designate a potential free agent to retain with a one-year deal.

Here's a rundown on where each team stands:

We continue our look at 15 possible fits for the Patriots in free agency this offseason with a breakdown of cornerback Brandon Carr. With the understanding that the NFL's franchise tag window is from now until March 5 (which means some of these players we list could ultimately be retained by their team) here are some players worth keeping an eye on that might be a fit in New England when free agency begins March 13:

"We have not decided if we're going to go with the magnetic card takers," Chiefs spokesman Ted Crews said.

Still, an industry official outside the organization told The Star that the team is, indeed, mulling bids from contractors who supply hand-held devices that could accept credit cards or validate pre-paid parking passes.

That's no assurance the team will drop the cash-only policy. For now, football fans without a parking hangtag can expect to shell out $27 in green money to park at Arrowhead later this year.
