The Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday were hosting several free agents for visits including TE Kevin Boss, RT Eric Winston and RB Mike Tolbert. Boss ended up signing a three-year deal with the Chiefs and there's no update on Winston's visit.
Kent Babb of the KC Star updates us on Tolbert's visit, reporting that things went "very well". Babb writes via TWitter that Tolbert remains "very much in the mix" with the Chiefs but he did leave KC without a contract.
If things really went that well, Tolbert would have signed a deal before leaving town. Sounds like he's gonna have his pick of multiple teams who want to sign him.
The San Diego Chargers want to bring Tolbert back and he's had multiple suitors in free agency. The San Diego Union-Tribune reports none of those teams interested in Tolbert have "met his threshold for signing."
The Chiefs recently signed RB Peyton Hillis so I don't think they have an immediate or even glaring need at running back but Tolbert is likely looking for a multi-year deal while Hillis is on a one-year contract.
Maybe that's why they're still interested in Tolbert but I don't really understand the interest in both of them. Why invest this much money and personnel into a position that will take the ball out of Jamaal Charles' hands? As a good rule, I don't want to do things that will limit the amount of times Charles touches the ball.
I'm not saying I'd be against Tolbert signing with the Chiefs. He's a good player and as another good rule (I have a lot of good rules) I like it when my team signs good players. I'm just trying to figure out the strategy of having all these guys in the backfield.
