Free Agent OT Marcus McNeill Visits Detroit

I've been wondering where free agent OT Marcus McNeill would end up. Earlier this week the San Diego Chargers released him, which is still kind of a surprise even though it shouldn't be. It wasn't that long ago McNeill was viewed as the Chargers longterm answer at left tackle.

McNeill's first known visit will be with the Detroit Lions, who could be seeking to replace OT Jeff Backus.

A few people have asked if the Chiefs should sign him and I'm not really sure, at this point at least, if it makes a lot of sense. McNeill's agent claims he's healthy but who knows if the team holds the same opinion.

Signing McNeill would give you two guys, McNeill and Branden Albert, who have only played on the left side in their careers. So you'd be re-working your offensive line and moving McNeill or Albert to the right side and you'd be hoping they can do it without really seeing any tape of them on the right side. I just don't think that makes a ton of sense this early in free agency with potentially other right tackle options out there.

But the biggest question is his health. He's had various ailments and has only played in 20 games in the last two seasons.
