24 hours into free agency and we know of a few players that will be visiting the Kansas City Chiefs but no signings yet. One of those visits was with John Carlson but it never really happened.
Carlson made it to KC but never visited with the Chiefs.
Carlson and Vikings GM Rick Spielman conducted a conference call to announce the signing and, according to several Minneapolis-area reporters, Carlson said that on that call that he made it to Kansas City last night but never did meet with the Chiefs because Spielman called and showed a "level of interest that was unparalleled."
So he was actually in KC. Just didn't make the 30-minute drive to Arrowhead from the airport.
On the one hand, you can't pitch a free agent if he doesn't even come talk to you. On the other hand, another team was able to convince him that they were a better opportunity than the Chiefs.
Second place isn't a very good feeling. But we're a Mike Tolbert or Eric Winston or whoever signing away from changing that (...hopefully).
