The 2012 NFL free agency period officially starts today at 3:00 p.m. (Arrowhead Time). That's when the Kansas City Chiefs free agents will officially become free and eligible to talk with any team and it's also when GM Scott Pioli can start combing the market for free agents on other teams he wants to sign.
Free agency used to start at midnight, which I admit I enjoyed. Something about drinking lots of Dr. Peppers to stay up all night long like a 12-year old kid and watching free agent transactions was a nice tradition.
The Chiefs have probably re-signed a number of their own guys already that we just don't know about, so keep an eye out for that. I don't expect KC to be super active early on in free agency, at least they usually aren't. Perhaps they could pursue a player here or there but this won't be like the Peyton Manning chase where you have a blow-by-blow account of what every team involved is thinking.
We'll have a number of things coming up today, including a look at every free agent for the Chiefs as well as a free agency primer.
