Surprise, surprise. Late last night the St. Louis Rams agreed to deal the No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft to the Washington Redskins, according to Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com. We knew the Rams wanted to deal the pick and we knew the Redskins wanted it. We just didn't think they'd agree to a deal seven weeks before the draft.
The target, of course, is Robert Griffin III, the Baylor quarterback who blew us away at the Combine. Officially, the deal can't be done until the new league year, which starts on March 13 (and, hey, free agency starts on that day, too!).
The package is extremely rich, as expected. The Redskins will move up to No. 2 and give to the Rams their No. 6 overall pick as well as two future first round picks and additional picks. Again, not official until early next week so things can change but holy smokes that's a heck of a trade package.
Is it worth it?
Just depends on RG3. If he turns into a star, no one will remember that the Redskins gave up this much to get him. But if he's a bust...well, this is the type of stuff that gets coaches and front office guys fired, even those who have won Super Bowls.
